In March 2003, a development survey was conducted within the boundaries of Horbat Castra antiquities site (Permit No. A-3849; map ref. 1973–76/7436–43) prior to construction. The survey, undertaken on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and financed by the Haifa municipality, was directed by M. Haiman, with the assistance of L. Barda (survey and GPS) and H. Stark (survey).
The following sites were found: a rock-hewn winepress (Site 25) with a square treading floor (c. 2 × 2 m); sherd scatters (Sites 1, 2, 4, 14, 17, 22, 29; diam. 10–30 m), dating to the Roman and Byzantine periods; Rock-cuttings (Sites 3, 5, 8, 9, 11–13, 15, 16, 18–21, 24, 27); rock-cut tombs (Sites 6, 7, 26, 28); a cupmark (Site 10); and a wall (Site 23; length c. 1 m).
