In February 2020, a salvage excavation was conducted in Kafr Yasif (Permit No. A-8683; map ref. 2148/7620) prior to construction. The excavation, on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority, was conducted by J.A. Sánchez Streger, with the assistance of G. Cinamon (supervisor), Y. Ya’akobi (administration), M. Peleg (photography and photogrammetric documentation), R. Be’eri (consultation and oversight) H. Tahan-Rosen (plan), R. Abu Raya (trial trenches), A. Shapiro (location map) and workers from Kafr Yasif and Kabul.
A single excavation square was opened in the western part of the neighborhood of Dar el-Gharbiya in Kafr Yasif (Figs. 1). It revealed (Fig. 2, 3) above the bedrock an accumulation of agricultural colluvial soil (L102), mixed with small stones (L101) and numerous sherds from the Byzantine period (fourth–sixth centuries CE). It seems that the accumulation derived from an early site that extended east of the excavation area and at a higher level. Although the pottery finds were not discovered in situ, they apparently attest to the period of activity around the excavation site.
